Julia May Theulen, Board President

Julia May Theulen serves as Board President of Concerned, Inc. and brings decades of experience in special education, leadership, and community advocacy. She dedicated 24 years to teaching special education, including 20 years at Tri-Center Community Schools as a Life Skills Special Education Teacher. Since 2008, Julia has also been actively involved with Special Olympics, serving as a coach and advocate for athletes with disabilities.

Julia earned both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Nebraska Omaha. Her professional expertise includes special education, life skills development, strategic planning, and long-term organizational leadership, all of which strongly support her role as Board President.

Julia has served on the Board of Directors of Concerned, Inc. since October 2003, providing long-standing institutional knowledge and continuity. In addition to her board service, she founded the Special Olympics team at Tri-Center Community Schools in 2008 and coached the team until her retirement in 2022. She continues her commitment to inclusive athletics as the coach of the Shelby County Special Olympics Team, a role she assumed in 2023.

Julia chose to serve on the Board of Concerned, Inc. out of a strong desire to give back to the community where she lives. As Board President, her primary focus is strategic planning to ensure the organization remains strong, responsive, and sustainable for the future.

Julia is motivated by Concerned, Inc.’s ability to positively impact both the individuals it serves and the broader community through dedicated staff and meaningful services. She is committed to helping position the organization to support members for decades to come. Raised on a farm outside Portsmouth, Iowa, and a graduate of Harlan Community High School, Julia values family, creativity, and lifelong learning. She enjoys woodworking, sewing, reading, and travel. Her guiding principle is: Be kind—you never know what burden another person is carrying.
